Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay

The Fuel for the Torch

Under the concept of a Green Olympics, environmental protection was a key element listed in the invitation documents to the design companies, by BOCOG. The fuel of the torch is propane, which is a common fuel with a low price. It is composed of carbon and hydrogen. No material, except carbon
dioxide and water remain after the burning, eliminating any risk of pollution.

The Burning System

Its stable burning technique and adaptability to the environment have reached a new technical level. It can stay alight in severe weather conditions such as strong wind, rain, snow, hail, etc. The flame can also be identified in sunshine and areas of extreme brightness so as to satisfy the
requirements of capturing photographic images and video footage.

The Design Timelines

2005 August

BOCOG developed the design concepts and requirements of the torch.

2005 December

BOCOG recruited potential torch designs from the design society. In total, BOCOG received 388 pieces of works.

2006 June-August

BOCOG selected the structural designer and the burning system designer.

2007 January

Beijing Olympic Torch was approved by IOC

Historical Geographer: Hou Renzhi

Hou Renzhi was born in Zaoqiang County, Hebei Province in December 1911, but is a native of Enxian, Shandong Province. Hou graduated from Yanjing University (in Beijing) in 1936, where he received both a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree.

In December 1941, during the time of the Japanese invasion, Hou was arrested and released in June of 1942; however, he continued to be denied freedom of movement and travel. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, in the summer of 1946, Hou went to the Department of Geography at Liverpool
University in England to pursue advanced studies.

In 1949, upon receiving his Doctor of Philosophy Degree, Hou returned as quickly as possible to China, his motherland. Exactly three days before the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Hou arrived in Beijing. He was appointed Associate Professor, Professor of History at Yanjing University.

Hou participated in the work of the Beijing City Planning Committee. Then, he advanced research in Chengde, Handan, Zibo and other historically significant cities. He dedicated himself to the investigation of deserts in Ningxia, Inner Mongolia and Gansu, and thereby provided valuable information
for the planting of sheltering forests in the future.

Hou is an expert on geochronic geography and developed new approaches to historical geography, especially the origin and development of water resources and the municipal plan for Beijing. His main research achievements may be found in his book entitled “The Principles and Practice of Historical
Geography.” Another book, Four Treatises on Historical Geography, discusses major theoretical issues. Hou is also the author of many works on popular science for the general public and was elected honorary member of the Chinese Society for Popular Science.

In 1980, Hou was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1999, he was awarded the distinguished George Davidson Medal by the American Geographical Society.

 Library>China ABC>Education>Introduction

Education in Rural Areas

Reflecting the fact that most of China’s population live in the countryside, 95.2 percent of all elementary schools, 87.6 percent of junior high schools and 71.5 percent of senior high schools are in rural areas (including counties and towns), with 160 million students at the compulsory education
stage.

The 1995-2000 “National Project of Compulsory Education in Impoverished Areas” involved special funds of 3.9 billion allocated from state finance and 10 billion yuan raised by local governments to improve schooling conditions in impoverished areas. In 2004, various special funds allocated from
state finance for compulsory education in rural areas reached 10 billion yuan, an increase of 72.4 percent on the 2003 figure of 5.8 billion. In 2005, state finance allocated another special fund of 3 billion yuan for constructing boarding schools in rural areas.

The China Agricultural Radio and TV School has developed over 20 years into the world’s largest distance learning organ for rural areas, with nearly 3,000 branch schools and a teaching and administrative staff of 46,000. Using radio, television, satellite, network, audio and video materials, it
has provided over 133 million person-times training in applicable technology for work in rural areas.

In the three years commencing from 2006, the Central Government will input 10 billion yuan to complete the project of modern distance education for elementary and high schools in rural areas. In 2006, the Central Government will provide TV, VCD/DVD equipment, and teaching disks to 110,000 rural
elementary school, including their branches; equip 380,000 elementary schools with satellite radio and television receivers; and equip some 40,000 rural junior high schools with Internet-enabled computers and multi-media classrooms.

 Library>China ABC>Economy>Introduction

Key National Projects

The “West-to-East Electricity Transmission,” the “West-to-East Gas Transmission,” and the “South-to-North Water Diversion” are the government’s three key strategic projects, aimed at realigning overall economic development and achieving rational distribution of national resources across China. The
“West-to-East Electricity Transmission” project is in full swing, involving hydropower and coal resources in western China and the construction of new power transmission channels to deliver electricity to the east. The southern power grid line, transmitting three million kw from Guizhou to
Guangdong, was completed in September 2004. The “West-to-East Gas Transmission” project includes a 4,000-km trunk pipeline running through 10 provinces, autonomous regions or municipalities, conveying natural gas to cities in northern and eastern China. This was finished in October 2004 and has a
design capacity of 12 billion cu m per year. Construction of the “South-to-North Water Diversion” project was officially launched on 27th December 2002 and completion of Phase I is scheduled for 2010; this will relieve serious water shortfall in northern China and realize a rational distribution
of the water resources of the Yangtze, Yellow, Huaihe, and Haihe river valleys.

In 2003, after a decade of hard work, another key national project –the Three Gorges Dam –began to impound water, opened its permanent locks to navigation and sent power to the grid from its first generating units. It is designed to install 26 sets of generators, each with a generating capacity
of 700,000 kw. When fully operational, the annual output of the Three Gorges Power Plant will reach 84.7 billion kw, produced from 26 sets of generators, each set able to meet the needs of a 1,000,000 population city.

Another key national project, the 1,142 km-long Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the highest railway in the world, will be completed in 2006.

 Library>China ABC>Government>Parties and Election

The Election System

3. Deputies from the armed forces

The number of deputies of the armed forces in the people’s congresses of where they are stationed is decided by the standing committees of the specific provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the Central Government, cities and counties where the army is stationed.

The number of deputies of the armed forces to the National People’s Congress is decided by the Standing Committee of the NPC and allocated by the supreme election committee of the armed forces.

4. Deputies in special administrative regions and among Taiwan compatriots

The allocation of the number of deputies to the NPC from special administrative regions and among Taiwan compatriots is decided by the Standing Committee of the NPC.

IV. Direct election

Direct election means voters directly elect deputies to the people’s congresses by casting their votes.

Direct elections are applicable to the election of deputies to the people’s congresses of the counties, districts, townships and towns.

1. Division of constituencies

(1) Constituency and voter’s group

A constituency is often divided into several voter’s groups.

(2) Size and type of constituencies

1) The size of constituencies

The size of constituencies is decided according to the principle that a constituency may have one to three deputies.

The population an urban deputy represents shall be more or less the same as those in different constituencies in urban areas. The population a rural deputy represents shall be more or less the same as those in different constituencies in rural areas.

2) Types of constituencies

Urban constituencies may be divided according to residential quarters or according to production units, institutions or work units.

In urban areas, voters of a production (or working) unit or an institution may vote in the constituencies where they work.

During rural election of the county people’s congress, normally several villages constitute a constituency. Villages of exceptionally large populations or townships of exceptionally small populations may stand as a constituency on their own.

During the election of deputies to the people’s congresses of townships and towns, several villager groups may form a constituency. Villagers groups with exceptionally large populations or villages with exceptionally small populations may stand as a constituency on their own.

2. The election process

(1) Naming the candidates

Candidates for deputies to the people’s congresses of the county and township levels are nominated according to constituencies.

Candidates may be nominated jointly or independently by political parties, mass organizations or more than ten voters, but the number of candidates a voter nominates shall not exceed the number of deputies in the corresponding areas.

(2) Casting the ballot

Ballot casting is presided over by the election committee.

Voting stations are established and mobile voting boxes are furnished in the constituencies. Election meetings may be called to cast the vote.

Voters obtain ballots by presenting their ID cards or voter’s cards.

Before ballot casting, staff presiding over the election shall tally and declare the number of voters, examine the ballot box in front of voters and organize voters to choose those to supervise ballot casting and help tally the votes.

The election is valid when more than half of the voters in a constituency have cast their votes. The election has to be held another time if less than this figure has cast votes.

Luobot -

This website, “Joshua Lawrence – Adolescent Literacy Research”, which I just happened to come
across, has downloadable recordings for Practical Chinese Books 1 & 2. I found recordings for book
1, lessons 1 through 24 — except lessons 17 to 20 appears to be missing. It also has audio for
book 2, lesson 1 through 20 — except that lessons 4 & 5 also appears to be missing.

Although the site indicates the audio is for the TLI books, someone familiar with this material
would need to confirm if it’s the same as that which TLI offers. I suspect these were recorded
from old tapes, possibly from an older edition of the books. I’m not sure how useful this audio
is on its own, but given that its for free, I might consider purchasing the books to go with them,
if they are separately available. I’ve heard in other threads that the TLI books are pretty good,
but I’m not sure if they are good for stand-alone study, or if now, you need the whole TLI course.
If so, then you’ve upscaled from free audio, to purchasing some books to go with the audio, to
making a major educational investment. Nice business model, if that were the idea; however, the
site instead appears to be in the business of “Adolescent Literacy Research” and it has numerous
resources in that area, if it is of interest to you.

When I went to TLI the tapes/books were only available to people doing the course. That was 5
years back so things may have changed. But I doubt the tapes are on the site you linked to
‘officially’ or with any ulterior motive of enticing people to TLI to study

Does anyone have any suggestions for books that would introduce and help develop reading skills in
classical (pre-modern) Chinese?

Also, should I go for a book written in English, or for a book written in Chinese (e.g. what high
schools and university students start with / use in class to learn)?

Suggestions and advice appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I agree with fireball on this…

In terms of mandarin the variation of accents does make the possibility of not being understood in
certain regions very HIGH! In general no it doesn’t have a huge effect but I know people that
complain that Sichuan people can’t understand their accents (I’m talking native chinese from xi’an
and some dong bei places). I can understand the local accents of many places now due to the fact
that I can understand the sichuan accent (hainan, shaanxi, taiwan are just a few where there are
many similarities of the sound- with a lot less of an accent though than sichuan). In english I
have never encountered an accent I couldn’t understand (unless it’s one that is chalked full of
odd word usage but that has to do with understanding there meaning not what is coming out of your
mouth). I think in terms of studying mandarin it is better to study in a place with a generally
neutral accent and not somewhere like beijing (wait a minute why am I in Sichuan??????? it’s not
neutral….). But that is just my opinion.

I agree with fireball on this, too
One of my colleges got much trouble when he traveled to Beijing on business, he found it’s
somewhat difficulty to understand the people there- and the other side found that too. He is well
educated, a guy with a bachelor degree, but he have never traveled to North China before that
trip… Of course the number of this kind is small
Sorry for my poor English. I am a native Chinese speaker.

In Shanghai, Tongji University International School JBC offers full-time and part-time Mandarin
courses. Our students study from 12 to 36 weeks. www.tongjistudy.com

Students like Shanghai because it’s an international city and of course there are many choices for
entertainment. It’s convenient also a great starting point for travel around China.

Our students who are most successful in learning the language are very determined to practise
wherever and whenever they have the opportunity. One of our best students gave a presentation on
his learning experience in China.

He emphasized reading, listening, speaking, writing as much as possible in any daily situation as
well as the classroom. It’s important to make Chinese friends and even say you don’t speak English
if you’re from Europe etc. Maximize your opportunities to speak Mandarin and find your best
methods to learning the language.

It is possible to learn Mandarin successfully in Shanghai in addition to enjoying the attractions
and conveniences.

With all the talk about Xi’an on this thread, does anyone have a recommendation for an intensive
Mandarin course, or Institute offering individual or small group courses in Xi’an?

monto -

In my opinion,
Han Language is not a fast food. If not pressed by the way of life, don’t take any intensive one.

Hi guys,

Love the software. Until my flashcards got hijacked. when i try to open zdt now i get the error
message that my user.script is missing or corrupt. I don’t have any idea why. I have attached a
screenshot of the error messages and my user.script file in case anybody wants to look at it.
well, i can’t attach the screenshot cause it’s too big and it won’t let me attach the
user.script…so, anyway…

I am using windows vista (shudder) and the only other thing i can think of was i had to remove my
default language (canadian english, leaving me with us english and chinese) from my language
options because my neice managed to change the keyboard layout. i only mention that because when i
try to open zdt now it freezes with the zdt name screen and if i click on it, by language bar
flashes, but i can’t do anything until i open the task manager and close zdt (no other way to
close it) and then i see the error messages.

if anybody has database saving advice it would be welcome.

Thanks a lot.

I uploaded (what I think is) the original user.script file from 0.7.0. Rename your old one, and
copy this to user.script, and confirm you can at least start zdt.

Assuming it will start, you can look at the two files and see if anything seems wrong with your
version.

[BTW, if you want to upload your user.script file, just rename it to give it an "approved"
extension, such as .txt.]
