Library>Travel in China>Protected Sites>Class Ⅲ>Contructions

Site of Lushun Prison

The Lvshun Prison is located on Yuanbao Lane in the old city of Lvshunkou District, Dalian City, Liaoning Province.

The Lvshun Prison was a den controlled by fascists where Chinese people were slaughtered when Russian and Japanese imperialists ruled Lvshun and Dalian. The prison was erected by Russian invaders in 1898. Having captured Lushun and Dalian, Japan rebuilt the prison in 1907 and expanded it from 85
to 253 cells, with a capacity of over 2,000. Covering more than 26,000 square meters, the prison is surrounded by red brick walls four meters high and 725 meters long. The invaders also occupied vast areas outside the prison where they built residences, bringing the total area to over 226,000
square meters.

An office building stands in front of the prison area, and through the central gate, to the left, right and in the middle, are prison houses. A lookout tower was built at the point where the houses converge, enabling guards to monitor the area in three directions simultaneously; Iron bars were
also used to divide the floors for optimal monitoring capability. Four dark underground cells were built especially for revolutionists.

In addition to the many forms of torture committed within the prison walls, it also served as a hard-labor camp. Over 15 factories were erected there, including machine building, printing, iron-casting, woodcutting and textile-weaving factories. Prisoners were forced to produce munitions and
commodities for the invaders. The gallows–a single, two-storied building–were constructed in the southeast corner of the prison area. Incomplete statistics indicate that about 700 communists and revolutionists were hanged on the second floor between 1942 and 1945. The exact number of people
murdered during the seven-year Russian rule and 40 years of the Japanese occupation is unknown.

 Library>Culture ABC>Folk Way>Ethnic Costumes

Kirgiz

Kirgiz men usually wear a blue or black sleeveless long gown made of sheepskin or cotton cloth over a white round-collared shirt with embroidered laces. Some wear a collarless long gown made of camel-hair and laced with black cloth around the cuffs. They hang a small knife or flint on their
leather belts, and often put on leather trousers and boots. They look very brave in their costumes.

People of the Kirgiz ethnic minority, no matter young or old, male or female, all wear a green, blue, purple or black round-topped little cap made of corduroy, and a high-topped leather hat or a terai in all seasons.

Kirgiz women wear a wide collarless jacket buttoned down the front and a black waistcoat or a collarless long gown over the jacket. Young women love red dress and cap and mostly wear a red or green kerchief, but old women prefer white kerchief. Women like to wear high embroidered boots. Unmarried
girls comb their hair into many plaits, decorated with silver chains and beads; once getting married, they will change the plaits to two.

Dongsi Mosque

The Dongsi mosque is the oldest mosque in Beijing City. It is located at No.13, the Dongsi South Street, Dongcheng District. There are different sayings about the construction time of the mospue. Some people say that it was built in 1356 during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), but some other people
think it was constructed in the 12thyear (1447) during the Zhengtong reign of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) by a military officer named Chen You.

The mosque faces the east. The existing buildings include two gates, a minaret, a worship hall and so on. The first gate was rebuilt in 1920. Originally, there was a minaret inside the second gate. The worship hall can accommodate 500 people and the lections of the Alcoran are carved on the hall’s
arches. There are 5 wing halls and 3 wing rooms respectively on the southern and northern parts of the courtyard with ambulatories in front of all of them. These buildings feature the Ming Dynasty architectural style. Many precious cultural relics are preserved in the mosque. In the library
located at the southern wing hall, you can find various versions of the Alcoran. The most precious one is a hand-written copy from the Yuan Dynasty. Also there are books presented by the emperor of Egypt.

The mosque is the headquarters of the Islamic Association of Beijing.

Chaoyuan Pavilion

Situated at the outskirt of Xi’an City in Shaanxi Province, the Chaoyuan Pavilion, also known as the Laojun Palace or the Jiangsheng Taoist Temple, is a famous extant Taoist temple in China.

Established in 666, it has a history of more than 1,300 years. Since the emperor of that time had the same surname Li as the founder of Taoism Laozi (or Li Er), he granted Laozi the titles of the Holy Ancestor and the Emperor Mahatma Ancestor Xuanyuan. Subsequently, a Taoist site, i.e. the
Chaoyuan Pavilion, was specially constructed near the then capital Chang’an (today’s Xi’an City) to offer sacrifices to him. Before long, the imperial court gave the order to hang the portraits of emperors of that dynasty, namely Gaozu, Taizong, Gaozong, Zhongzong, Ruizong and others, in the
temple.

It is said that in the 8thcentury Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty (618-907) once dreamed that Laozi befell to the Chaoyuan Pavilion, so the temple was renamed as the Jiangsheng Taoist Temple (the Taoist temple visited by Laozi) and a white marble statue of Laozi was made and enshrined in the
temple.

The structures of the Chaoyuan Pavilion were once quite grandiose in the history. Due to various reasons, the buildings were seriously destroyed. Through intensive efforts, the Sacrifice Hall, the Main Hall, the Temple Gate, wing rooms and other buildings were rebuilt on the original site. The
extant buildings of the Chaoyuan Pavilion are the structures left after part of buildings were dismantled in the early 1950s.

Religious Belief

The Present Conditions of Religion inChina

Chinais a country with a great diversity of religions, with over 100 million followers of the various faiths. The main religions are Buddhism, Islam, Christianity,China’s indigenous Taoism, along with Shamanism, Eastern Orthodox Christianity and the Naxi people’s Dongba religion. The Hui, Uygur,
Kazak, Kirgiz, Tatar, Ozbek, Tajik, Dongxiang, Salar and Bonan peoples adhere to Islam; the Tibetan, Mongolian, Lhoba, Moinba, Tu and Yugur, to Tibetan Buddhism (also known as Lamaism), and the Dai, Blang and Deang to Theravada Buddhism. Quite a few Miao,Yaoand Yi are Christians. Religious Han
Chinese tend to practice Buddhism, Christianity or Taoism.

Buddhism was introduced toChinafromIndiaapproximately in the first century A.D., becoming increasingly popular and the most influential religion inChinaafter the fourth century. Tibetan Buddhism, as a branch of Chinese Buddhism, is popular primarily inTibetandInner Mongolia. NowChinahas more than
13,000 Buddhist temples.

Islam probably first reachedChinain the mid-seventh century. The Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) witnessed the zenith of prosperity of Islam. NowChinahas more than 30,000 mosques.

Catholic influence reachedChinaseveral times after the seventh century, and Protestantism was introduced intoChinain the early 19th century. Now there are more than 4,600 Catholic churches and over 12,000 Protestant churches, as well as over 25,000 other types of Christian places of worship
inChina.

Taoism probably took shape as a religion during the second century, based on the philosophy of Lao Zi (traditionally said to be born in 604 BC) and his work, theDao De Jing(Classic of the Way and Virtue).Chinanow has more than 1,500 Taoist temples.

Chinahas the following national religious organizations: Buddhist Association of China, Taoist Association of China, Islamic Association of China, Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association, Chinese Catholic Bishops’ College, Three-Self Patriotic Movement Committee of the Protestant Churches ofChina,
and China Christian Council.

Legal Protection of the Freedom of Religious Belief

Chinese citizens’ right of the freedom of religious belief is protected by the Constitution and laws. In the Constitution of the People’s Republic ofChina, freedom of religious belief is a basic right enjoyed by all citizens. Article 36 of the Constitution stipulates, “Citizens of the People’s
Republic ofChinaenjoy freedom of religious belief… No State organ, public organization or individual may compel citizens to believe in, or not to believe in, any religion; nor may they discriminate against citizens who believe in, or do not believe in, any religion.” Again, “the State protects
normal religious activities… No one may make use of religion to engage in activities that disrupt public order, impair the health of citizens or interfere with the educational system of the State”. In addition, “Religious bodies and religious affairs are not subject to any foreign domination”.

In accordance with the Constitution’s provisions on freedom of religious belief of citizens, the Chinese government has formulated specific policies to ensure respect for and safeguard freedom of religious belief for ethnic minorities and guarantee all normal religious activities of ethnic
minority citizens. Currently, there are more than 30,000 mosques inChina, of which 23,000 are in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and 13,000-some Buddhist temples, of which are over 1,700 places for Tibetan-Buddhism activities inTibet.

C 希 cē
D 帝 dē
E 亿 ē
F eh fuh éf
G zhee gē
S eh-seh és
T 剃 tē
U 哟 wū
Ü ~ yū
V 威 vē
W 答不六 wā
X 爱克斯 xī
Y 外 yā
Z zay zē

First column are English majuscule lettres.

Second column are approximate sounds in Chinese when a Chinese speaker pronounces the English
lettres. Chinese-accented pronunciation for the English lettres. There is no standard because this
is the incorrect way to pronounce the English lettres. When a teacher teaches English in China the
teacher uses the International Phonetic Alphabet.
“ei bi: si: di: …” I wrote them according to how I felt people pronounced them, and those are
purely my choice of characters, 答不六 can also be 达步遛 or anything else that are
pronounced as dábùliù(r). Also there might be differences to it from person-to-person and from
region-to-region. I have heard the English lettre “C” pronounced both as “西(希) xī” and also
as “塞 sēi (塞’s regional pronunciation)”.

Third column are the standard pronunciation for the Hanyu Pinyin lettres or Chinese lettres,
written in Hanyu Pinyin. This has a standard and also it has a standard way of writing them with
Chinese characters as well.

X-Ray is 爱克斯光 àikèsīguāng or X光

I also heard from different people that X should be pronounced by Chinese as [eks] – exactly as in
English and “xi” (Pinyin). This makes a 3rd version.

It’s too late, I probably return to this thread to talk about “AA制”, “BP机” “X光” and similar
words.

EDIT:

Edit:
I guess 爱克斯光 and X光 are identical but X is meant to be pronounced in English but
爱克斯 is an attempt to transliterate it. I am also interested if there are any formal guides
on how to pronounce and how to write down Latin/Roman, English or Pinyin letters (if there is a
difference in Chinese).

Chinese Wikipedia:

http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/X

doesn’t give the Chinese pronunciation of the letter.

trien27 -

atitarev:
“I guess 爱克斯光 and X光 are identical but X is meant to be pronounced in English but
爱克斯 is an attempt to transliterate it.”

Not transliterate: To transliterate[In Latin: trans- = cross/cross over, -liter- = letter, ate =
"to make?"] is to transpose from one letter to the next from one language to the next using two or
more alphabets. Since there’s no alphabet in Chinese, you cannot use the word tranliterate. It is
to “sinicize” [to make something look Chinese] the word.

X光 = used in HK to translate X-ray.
爱克斯光 is Mandarin speaker’s attempt to sinicize the word/letter: 爱克斯, aikesi is read
as “aik (faint e) s” = X.

光 = ray of light; bright.

imron -

I’m sorry, but transliterate is perfectly acceptable English, even when talking about using
Chinese to represent English words.

From my Oxford Dictionary:

Quote:

transliterate: (usu. be transliterated) write or print (a letter or word) using the closest
corresponding letters of a different alphabet or language

We all know chinese doesn’t have an alphabet and letters, but to suggest that means you can’t use
the word transliterate when referring to words taken from another language is IMO incorrect.

mr.stinky -

excellent! next time a chinese friend mentions the vast body of chinese literature, i’ll just
laugh and point out chinese has no alphabet, hence no literature! after all, who could
write it (uh, character it?) – they’re all illiterate.

atitarev -

I agree, it’s OK to use “transliterate”, although Chinese doesn’t normally use letters.

I asked a Chinese colleague, how they normally write “Java”, he said it was normally written and
pronounced the English way, the wikipedia confirmed this + for some other programming languages.

However, Declan’s Chinese Dictionary suggests 爪哇 [zhuǎwā] (no immediate conversion with MS
IME). My search produced quite a few hits. When I used a Chinese employment site, I saw too many
Roman spelling of programming languages in Chinese ads. It seems both are possible and popular.

taught English for 5 years). Asked if she spells that way to Chinese speakers and they understand
and she says yes.

Just discovered BOTM – seems like a great idea – although I’ve been tending to look at fairly
basic books for 10-12 year olds so far – I’d love the challenge of a proper novel. I’ve read the
posts from when this got set up back in ’05 – how does it tend to work out? Online books? What are
the thoughts on the January book? I’m in SH now so it’s good to pick it up!

About Ads (and how to hide them) — Your message here

imron -

The way it tends to work is that someone gets all fired up about reading novels, suggests a book,
and then a bunch of people say they’ll read it too, and then by the end of the month no-one does
(P.S. Muyongshi, yes I’m still on track to finish 每个姑娘都单纯 by the end of the month)

If you look in the BOTM forum, you’ll see there are *large* gaps in continuity. That being said,
the last 2 1/2 months have been going ok, and I for one am making an effort to do more reading in
Chinese and am going to try and keep it going.

If you have a suggestion for a book, then towards the end of the month, you can start a new thread
suggesting it. If you’re lucky, you’ll have a couple of people respond and say they’ll read it
with you.

Mostly it’s online books, but for the current BOTM, I went and bought the paperback version,
because I don’t like reading large amounts of text online.

For next month, I’m thinking about 球状闪电a novel that’s been discussed in another thread on
Chinese Science Fiction.

eeraser -

BOTM? for 10-12 year olds? It sounds like it may be above my level, but I should give it a try.
What is the website for the BOTM?

muyongshi -

The forum where all the threads of BOTM things are posted is this one (ie where this question is
posted and the two current ones are for December (there is still a few days left and it is a good
book) and coming up is January.

roddy -

Also there’s no reason why you can’t go back and read a BOTM from past months – you might not be
reading it alongside others, but you’re welcome to post as you read with any questions or comments
and it’s pretty much guaranteed that at least a couple of people on here will have read it
previously and be able to help.

eeraser -

Thank-you very much. I have been reading posts via Google Reader and I am missing out on so much
here. I am going to be doing allot of exploring for a few weeks!
